Introduction to 4x4 training

Course Curriculum:

Day One - 1/2 day Knowledge Development (classroom). During lunch you'll get an overview of 

  • Remote Electronic Communications
  • Map Use
  • Off-road Survival

Afternoon: 1/2 day 

  • Getting to Know Your Vehicle (Priority Customization for your Vehicle)
  • 4WD Gearing
  • Beginning Hill Climbing
  • Traveling Responsibly


Day Two

  • Airing Down and Inflating Tires
  • Tire Repair 101
  • Driving a Level Rocky Trail and Spotting
  • Driving in Sand and Use of Sand Ladders
  • Lifting Your Vehicle Off the Ground (Hi-Lift Jack, Bottle/Scissor Jacks, Inflatable Jack)
  • Changing a tire on soft and uneven terrain
  • Proper Use of Kinetic Energy Straps
  • Electronic Traction Control and Locker Use (for those that have these features)
  • Trail Driving


Target Audience: The curriculum is primarily designed for novice off-road drivers owning stock or slightly modified 4-Wheel Drive vehicles.   


What Should You Wear: Please come prepared with long pants, good boots, gloves, and sun protection.


Vehicle Requirements: Any reliable 4-Wheel Drive vehicle with:

  • 2-speed 4WD transfer case (must be able to shift into a 4-Low gearing)
  • Street legal
  • Full-size spare tire
  • Full tank of gas
  • Seat belts for all passengers
  • Vehicle in excellent working condition, no fluid leaks, etc


Equipment Requirements: During this course you will be introduced to essential off-road equipment. The equipment used in this course will be supplied by the trainer, but you are welcome to use your own equipment. Please note that your personal equipment will be evaluated for safety before use. 


Food and Lodging: Food and lodging will not be supplied. Please prepare to bring a packed lunch during the day, and plenty of water. There are many suitable hotels and camping areas close to the training area. Reservations for lodging are the responsibility of the attendee. You will not be allowed to camp on-site at the training facility.

Prerequisite: A desire to learn and have FUN!

Length of Course: 2 days; 8:30am to 5:00 pm 

Testing: There will be a written test at the conclusion of each day

Cost: $390 per person
